Film arahan sutradara asal Inggris, Tom Hooper, The King’s Speech, memimpin daftar perolehan nominasi pada ajang penghargaan The 83rd Annual Academy Awards, dengan meraih 12 nominasi, termasuk nominasi Best Picture, Best Achievement in Directing untuk Hooper serta nominasi Best Actor in a Leading Role untuk aktor Colin Firth. Kesuksesan The King’s Speech tersebut diikuti oleh True Grit yang meraih 10 nominasi serta The Social Network dan Inception yang sama-sama meraih 8 nominasi. Keempat film tersebut akan bersaing untuk memenangkan kategori Best Picture bersama film Black Swan, The Fighter, The Kids Are All Right, 127 Hours, Toy Story 3 dan Winter’s Bone.

Sebut saja Mark Ruffalo (The Kids Are All Right) dan John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone) yang sama-sama secara mengejutkan tampil di daftar nominasi Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
